Success In Healing
Success In Healing
When you experience a setback, there is an instinctive reaction to recoil from anything related to that experience. For example, oftentimes, a person involved in a car accident is reluctant to drive after the incident. Someone that has had a negative experience in a boat will avoid getting out on the water for a while. In the same way, a believer that experiences a prayer failure will often just want to put prayer away on the shelf for a while. How do we deal with this?
An example we can look at is Jesus. In the sixth chapter of Mark, Jesus returned to His hometown where the people refused to accept that He was the Messiah. After all, they knew Him; they’d seen Him grow up; they knew His family – how could He possibly be the Messiah? In rejecting who He was, they limited what He could do for them and that’s why the Bible tells us that He couldn’t do any miracles in His hometown (Mark 6:5-6). Notice the scripture says He couldn’t; it doesn’t say He wouldn’t. Jesus was unable to manifest miracles for the people of His hometown. All He could do was heal a few minor ailments.
So how did Jesus deal with this setback? Verse 6 tells us that He went to the villages in that area and taught the people. What do you imagine He would’ve taught them? I would imagine that a big part of it must’ve been teaching them from the Word how to receive from God. Faith can only arise if we hear the Word of God (Rom 10:17).
Therefore, if we want to experience success in healing, we must
- Put the Word of God first place in our lives.
- Refuse to be condemned over a prayer failure
- Be vigilant in trusting God

How To Receive A Divine Miracle
How To Receive A Divine Miracle
The experience of Peter walking on the water as described in Matthew 14:22-32 reveals to us some simple truths of how to receive a miracle. These truths can be implemented by any believer to be able to receive a healing or any other miracle. Technically speaking, healing is recovery or restoration of a diseased organ or part. Healing can be natural (God has placed a certain amount of healing in every person’s body and it will automatically go into action to bring about restoration), supernatural or miraculous. Supernatural healing is when recovery occurs at an accelerated rate. If the normal recovery time is 4 days for example and you recover in 1 day or a few hours then you experienced a supernatural healing. Miraculous healing is when it occurs instantaneously.
What I’m going to share is how you can receive a supernatural or miraculous healing. In Matthew’s account, Jesus was walking on the water to get to the disciples who had been crossing a lake. It was night time and the conditions were not favourable for maritime craft. As the disciples struggled to navigate across the lake, they saw the outline of a human being on the horizon above the waterline.
Thinking it was a ghost, they cried out for fear and immediately Jesus identified Himself to them. Peter, then responded with a request: ‘If it’s really you Jesus, then command me to come to you on the water’. Jesus had no option but to reply ‘Come!’ and with this command, the first component of a divine miracle is revealed: The Word of God.
If you want to receive a divine miracle then you must receive a Word from God. It is impossible for a divine miracle to flow without a Word from God. This is seen clearly and consistently throughout scriptures.
- The paralytic was unable to walk until he received a word from God: ‘Rise. Take up your bed…’ (Mark 2:11)
- Peter and his business partners were unsuccessful in catching fish all night until they received a word from God: ‘Launch out into the deep and let your nets down for a catch’ (Luke 5:4)
- Jairus received news that his daughter had died but this changed after he received a word from God: ‘Don’t be afraid, only believe and she will be made well’ (Luke 8:50)
Receiving a Word from God constitutes 98% of a miracle and so it’s crucial to receive this. If this is true (and it is) then the natural response would be: ‘How can I get a Word from God for my need?’ The bible is filled with God’s Word and there are numerous promises covering every need of mankind. If it’s healing we need then Psalm 103:2-3 is a good one ‘(2) Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: (3) Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,’ Notice that it doesn’t say He heals some of your diseases or most of your diseases; it says He heals ALL of your diseases! That’s great news! And that’s the first part of receiving a divine miracle: the Word of God.
But if we only have a Word from God, we’ll never receive a miracle (even though we’re 98% of the way there). There is more that’s required. Peter didn’t just receive a Word from God; he believed the Word of God and that is the second part of receiving a divine miracle. We must believe what God has promised us. Believing the Word makes up 1% of the miracle.
How do you know when you’re believing? There are several indicators of faith. Firstly, you know you’re believing when you can imagine yourself with the desired result. Many want a miracle but they can’t see themselves with it. If this is your experience then how can you turn it around? Take the promises of God about your situation and begin to read them over to yourself and allow yourself to imagine them coming to pass in your life. Ask yourself, ‘What would it feel like if this came to pass in my life right now?’ and then allow yourself to imagine what it would be like. If you stay at it long enough, you will find that God's Word and your imagination will cause faith to rise in your heart.
Another couple of indicators of faith are peace and joy (Rom 15:13). In other words, you’re not anxious, fearful or fretful about what’s happening to your body. You have a confidence growing within that what God has promised is true and it will manifest in your life.
So, if you have received a Word from God and you believe the Word from God you are 99% of the way to receiving a divine miracle. But the miracle will not manifest until we have 100%. It’s like an electrical circuit; no power will flow until the circuit is complete.
The final 1% of the miracle is acting on the Word.
- Peter received a Word (‘Come!’).
- Peter believed the Word.
- Peter acted on the Word

How to Receive Healing as a Citizen of Heaven
How to Receive Healing as a Citizen of Heaven
There are four major ways through which we can receive physical healing. The first is naturally. Your body was designed by God to naturally heal itself. When you get injured for example, the body responds by closing blood vessels that may be ruptured and sending white blood cells to the region to fight infection. Eventually over time, damaged cells are replaced and the injured area restored. Sometimes however, your body may be having difficulty fighting a certain condition (maybe your immune system is in a weakened state for example) and so a doctor can prescribe medication or alter your diet in order to assist the body to heal itself. This is the second way to receive physical healing.
The third way to receive physical healing is miraculously through the gifts of the Holy Spirit such as Gifts of Healings, Working of Miracles and the Gift of Faith (1 Cor 12:9-10). This is powerful, most often instantaneous and is not dependant on the receiver having faith. It is totally a work of God and bypasses the laws of nature. Receiving healing through the gifts of the Spirit was set up by God specifically to help those who, for various reasons have found themselves in a situation that requires a miracle of healing but they are unable to activate their faith to receive it.
As good as this sounds, receiving healing through the Gifts of the Spirit is not God’s best because it implies that we're in a crisis in need of a miracle. God does not want us to live from crisis to crisis, being bailed out by miracles. His desire is for us to be like Jesus; walking in victory and using the authority and power He’s given us to change the things that are not right in our lives. God’s best is when we rise up and move forward trusting and acting on what He’s told us in His Word. This is activated faith and it pleases God.
The Gifts of the Spirit are meant for those who don’t know how to activate their faith. Unfortunately, too many Christians depend on the gifts of the Spirit to receive healing. Many believers are travelling all over the country looking for someone who has ‘the anointing’. They think if they can just get someone who has the anointing to lay hands on them they might have a chance of getting healed. But because they’re using a method which was never intended to be the norm, they’re not guaranteed of success. The greatest problem in depending on the gifts of the spirit for your healing is that you never know if you will receive it.
The fourth and final means by which we can receive healing is God’s best way. It's guaranteed to work if you put it to work properly. It often works hand in hand with our body’s natural tendency to heal itself and it can also work effectively with (but is not dependant on) medical assistance to accelerate recovery and repair. I call this method ‘Receiving healing as a Citizen of Heaven’. This is God’s best for us because it involves faith. God designed us to live by faith (Rom 1:17); everything in the Kingdom of Heaven is received by faith and in fact, without faith it’s impossible to please God (Heb 11:6).
How then can we receive healing as a Citizen of Heaven? I’m glad you asked!
Firstly, you must be fully persuaded that God wants you well. This is the major reason why most people fail to receive healing. People can have all sorts of opinions about healing but if it doesn’t line up with the Bible then you shouldn’t accept it. Some of the weird ideas I’ve heard others talk about when they discuss healing are:
- Supernatural healing no longer occurs today; it passed away when the Apostles passed away,
- God won’t heal you unless you’re reading your bible, going to church, praying every day, paying your tithes and being nice to everyone
- God will make you sick to teach you something
- Sometimes you can be sick for the glory of God
- It’s all up to God and so if it’s His will then you’ll be healed otherwise you’ll stay sick
None of these ideas are correct because none of them are from the bible. The bible shows us clearly that Jesus never taught any of these things. He said that if you’ve seen Him then you’ve seen the Father. Jesus is the exact representation of the Father (John 14:9; Heb 1:3). So if we want to know what God is like then we just need to look at Jesus’ attitude toward that issue. When it comes to healing, Jesus healed everyone who asked Him (Matt 4:23-24; Matt 8:16; Luke 4:40-41). He healed multitudes and so if any of the ideas listed above were true then why didn’t Jesus talk about them?
Secondly, if we’re going to receive healing as a citizen of Heaven then we need to recognise that God has already taken care of sickness through what Jesus did on the cross. We’re not waiting for God to do something; He’s already done something. God sent Jesus to take care of sickness and when He died on that cross, He not only bore our sin but also our sicknesses. That’s why 1 Pet 2:24 says by His wounds you were healed. If you were healed then you’re not going to be healed. Too many Christians are trying to get something they’ve already got.

Faith for Healing
I love reading the stories of the miracles of Jesus in the gospels. I imagine myself there watching Him minister not only to people with broken bodies but also teaching His disciples how the Kingdom of God works. One of the things that stands out in the healing ministry of Jesus is the significance that He put on people exercising their faith in order to receive. Consider the following as just a sample of what the Lord said about faith:
- To The Centurion: Go your way and as you have believed so let it be done for you (Matt 8:5-13)
- To the Two blind men: According to your faith be it done to you (Matt 9:29)
- To the Syrophonecian Woman: Great is your faith. Let it be to you as you desire (Matt 15:21-28)
- To one of the Ten Lepers: Your faith has made you whole (Luke 17:19)
- To Blind Bartimaeus: Go your way. Your faith has made you whole (Mark 10:52)
- To the woman with the issue of blood: Daughter your faith has made you well (Mark 5:25-34)
- Jesus saw the paralytic’s faith and he was healed (Mark 2:1-12)
It’s obvious just from these accounts that faith is a critical component in receiving healing and this makes sense because the bible says that without faith it’s impossible to please God (Heb 11:6).
While faith is essential in receiving healing, we need to recognize that true faith requires action. There is no such thing as a person who believes but is inactive. Faith without corresponding actions is dead (James 2:17). If you really believed something, then you’d act on what you believe. For example, if I said I bought a gift for you to come and collect, if you believed what I said then you’d act on what you believed and come to collect it.
The principle of acting on what you believe is a key component to faith. There are many believers who claim they’re believing the Lord for healing but are making allowances in their daily activities for the illness. They think like they’re sick and they act like they’re sick. If you really believe that God has provided healing for you then look for ways to act on what you believe. For example, if your knees are sore, you may find it a stretch in your mind to run. If you believe healing belongs to you then look for a lower impact activity that you can do: maybe walking, squats, lunges etc… The point I’m making is that in order to keep faith flowing, corresponding actions are vital.
But don’t act because I said so; act because you see from the Word of God that healing is yours and healed people don’t belong in a place of inactivity.
There is so much more to say about faith and its role in healing. This 3 part audio series goes into much more detail about it.
